Interconnectivity is one of the biggest benefits that Web 2.0 and social media has brought to us - it has brought us closer together, connected us in ways that we have never thought possible and provided us with information that was previously either difficult for us to access or simply just eluded us. I will broach this topic within the context of my moving into Tallahassee from more than 10,000 miles away.
Moving into a new city or country can often be very difficult - where can I eat, what can I do, how do i make friends, what is the culture like? The questions are endless, and the worries sky high. i can honestly say that without Social Media or Web 2.0, I could never have settled as quickly, or as comfortably as I currently have.
I am quite an avid Ultimate Frisbee player back in Singapore, and I was afraid that coming to Tallahassee, i would have to sacrifice a year without my favourite sport, especially in light of the Covid crises. However, through the Facebook group Ultimate Frisbee Tallahassee, I was instantly connected with a like-minded, accepting bunch of people who shared the same interests and passions as I did!
In my case, Social media and Web 2.0 have been wonderous tools in helping me find out all I want to know about this place. That being said, if any of you still have places to recommend to get good coffee or craft beers, i would love to hear from you, and check those places out!
Hi Kelvyn! It looks like we're in the same boat; I moved to Tallahassee last summer to start the doc program, but before I did I scoured the internet for places that would appeal to me, shared interest groups, and opportunities offered by FSU to interact with my peers. The pandemic has really limited my options in that sense, but I did join several Facebook groups in the area and have connected with my cohort through various social media tools. Fortunately, the pandemic seems to be dissipating and with live classes resuming in the fall, I'm hopeful that I'll be able to meet and socialize with people that I've only met through Web 2.0 capabilities.
ReplyDeleteHey Kelvyn, I really wished I had thought of this when I moved to Tally in 2016. I'm no longer there but this would've been a much easier way to meet friends than in a grimy bar bathroom. LOL. When I was there I really liked the Lucky Goat Cafe, Black Dog on Lake Ella (there is a second one near FAMU) and loved Liberty for interesting and constantly changing food and drink menu.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your recommendations! I would be sure to check them out!
DeleteI should take a look at Tallahassee Foodies! Thanks for sharing, Kelvyn.
ReplyDeleteKelvyn, sooooo glad you found Tallahassee Foodies!! Tallahassee is rough on restaurants and if they last past 2 years, (pre pandemic) it's a miracle.
